A day after 300 dead chickens were found at a government poultry farm here, another 50 chickens died at the farm on Monday. Authorities have ordered residents to avoid chickens and eggs because of suspected bird flu.
District Animal Husbandry Officer Manoj Kumar Mani said around 350 chickens have died in the last six days due to suspected bird flu. The report on the samples sent from Calcutta to Bhopal for final investigation has not yet been received, he said.
"We have issued a warning to people not to consume eggs or chicken for the time being," he added. Sources said that the district animal husbandry department does not have updated records of private chicken farms in Bokaro and their conditions.
"We have started collecting information about the supply of chickens from different types of poultry to city markets to find out if deaths are reported from other places as well," said a source from the district animal husbandry office.
Mani said, "Though we have not received any information about fatalities in other farms, veterinary officials have been asked to conduct regular checks on poultry farms."
